Get answers for some of the most frequently asked questions about SAFe certification. Click on a question to see the answer.

To keep a SAFe® certification in good standing, certification holders need to complete a predetermined number of continuing education hours (professional development units [PDUs] each year prior to renewing the certification. Examples of PDUs include attending a course, going to a conference, attending industry meetings (ex., Meetups), reading books, and reading articles.

Note that individuals are required to track their PDUs on their own, as there is no formal system for reporting these PDUs. Please see the following PDU requirements:

Scaled Agile, Inc. is a Registered Education Provider (REP) with the Project Management Institute (PMI). Students who attend its role-based SAFe courses can claim PDUs to fulfill their PMI certification requirements.

Students can use the following SAFe courses as PDUs to support ongoing educational and professional development requirements for Project Management Professional (PMP), Program Management Professional (PgMP), and PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP) certifications. (Refer to the PMI Continuing Certification Requirements [CCR] Handbook for specific details.)

Certified SAFe professionals may be eligible to apply for Scrum Education Units (SEUs) toward earning or renewing a Certified Scrum Professional (CSP) designation through the Scrum Alliance under Category C: Outside Events. Please confirm requirements with Scrum Alliance’s SEU policy before submitting units for credit.

Taking a course

To receive a SAFe certification, individuals must first attend a SAFe training course. Refer to this helpful guide for help in selecting an appropriate course. Course costs vary based on date and location, and can be found on the class detail page by clicking a class listing on the Scaled Agile public course calendar.

Taking the certification exam

After completing a course, individuals are eligible to take the exam and, upon passing, get certified.

SAFe certifications are valid for one year and include membership in the SAFe Community Platform. After the first year, individuals may renew their certification at the cost specified below.

If you are currently hold any SAFe® 4 certification or are a Certified SAFe® 4 Program Consultant, there are two certification upgrade paths available:

  • SAFe 5 Certified Member upgrade – This upgrade path is available in January, 2020 to anyone who has a SAFe 4  certification and has a current SAFe Community membership.
  • SAFe 5 Program Consultant upgrade – This upgrade path is available in December, 2020 to anyone who is a Certified SAFe 4 Program Consultant and has a current SAFe Community membership.

SAFe Community Platform members and Certified SAFe® 4 professionals will have access to these upgrade learning plans on the SAFe Community Platform.
