Get answers for some of the most frequently asked questions about SAFe certification. Click on a question to see the answer.

To keep a SAFe® certification in good standing, certification holders need to complete a predetermined number of continuing education hours (professional development units [PDUs] each year prior to renewing the certification. Examples of PDUs include attending a course, going to a conference, attending industry meetings (ex., Meetups), reading books, and reading articles.

Note that individuals are required to track their PDUs on their own, as there is no formal system for reporting these PDUs. Please see the following PDU requirements:

Scaled Agile, Inc. is a Registered Education Provider (REP) with the Project Management Institute (PMI). Students who attend its role-based SAFe courses can claim PDUs to fulfill their PMI certification requirements.

Students can use the following SAFe courses as PDUs to support ongoing educational and professional development requirements for Project Management Professional (PMP), Program Management Professional (PgMP), and PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP) certifications. (Refer to the PMI Continuing Certification Requirements [CCR] Handbook for specific details.)

Certified SAFe professionals may be eligible to apply for Scrum Education Units (SEUs) toward earning or renewing a Certified Scrum Professional (CSP) designation through the Scrum Alliance under Category C: Outside Events. Please confirm requirements with Scrum Alliance’s SEU policy before submitting units for credit.

Taking a course

To receive a SAFe certification, individuals must first attend a SAFe training course. Refer to this helpful guide for help in selecting an appropriate course. Course costs vary based on date and location, and can be found on the class detail page by clicking a class listing on the Scaled Agile public course calendar.

Taking the certification exam

After completing a course, individuals are eligible to take the exam and, upon passing, get certified. A first attempt to take the certification exam within 30 days of the course is included with the cost of the course. Costs to retake exams are outlined in the following table:

SAFe certifications are valid for one year and include membership in the SAFe Community Platform. After the first year, individuals may renew their certification at the cost specified below.

SAFe certification focuses on the skills, knowledge, and mindset required to successfully perform the specified role within SAFe. To have the highest chance at passing the certification exam, candidates should attend the relevant course, read recommended books and articles, take advantage of videos and enablement, gain real-world experience in the role, and then take the exam. Scaled Agile exams maintain rigorous quality standards to ensure that those who have earned the certification are well prepared to effectively fulfill their role in a SAFe enterprise.

There are no certification upgrades or exams associated with SAFe 4.6.

It is highly recommended that SPCs and SPCTs certified on SAFe 4.5 complete the updated Course Delivery Enablement for each course they plan to teach.
